US v. Lennon: Panel Discussion

On September 12, 2006, the ACLU and NYCLU co-hosted a screening of "The U.S. vs. John Lennon." The documentary from Lions Gate Films flashes back to a time of an increasingly unpopular war, a restive public, a president engaged in secret surveillance, and the world-famous musician who spoke out in protest of the war and was threatened with deportation as a result. The screening was followed with a panel discussion featuring Art Eisenberg, Legal Director of the NYCLU; Jameel Jaffer, ACLU attorney; Eve Cary, who represented the NYCLU and ACLU at Lennon's deportation hearings; and Joe Treen, who wrote a series of articles about the Lennon INS hearings for Rolling Stone.

Inside Europe: The Inside Take on European Affairs

This week: Are soldiers welcome in Italy's cities?--Spanish winemakers struggle with rising temperatures--Iranian rappers find creative freedom in Germany--What's life really like inside the corridors of the EU?--The trials and tribulations of a French check-out girl--Why are young Russian artists exhibiting in their own living rooms?--All this plus more on this week's Inside Europe.
Tune in to Inside Europe on the radio or subscribe to the Inside Europe podcast! You can also download the programme from our website. Are soldiers really welcome in Italian cities?

Italy is deploying troops in cities across the nation in part of a controversial operation to boost security. For the next 6 months, a total of 3000 soldiers will patrol the streets.

Boosting law and order featured prominently in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's election campaign. The soldiers will also guard sensitive sites, such as embassies and immigrant detention centres. The government argues the measures are necessary to meet their promise of getting tough on crime.

Poland's plans to abolish military service

The Polish government plans to put an end to conscription before the end of the year. However, Polish President Lech Kaczynski disagrees.

By 2010, Poland's armed forces, currently the largest in Central and Eastern Europe, are to be made up of professional soldiers. Critics doubt they'll be able to recruit enough volunteers.

Poland may have seen its last batch of National Service recruits take their oaths. Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, surprised his audience in a speech last weekend, when he announced his plans to abolish military service. Tusk hopes to modernise Polish armed forces in line with those of other European countries.

President Lech Kaczynski's spokesman warned of the possibility of a presidential veto. However, many young Polish men greet the news with relief.

Spanish winemakers struggle with rising temperatures

Harvest time is hitting Spanish vineyards earlier and earlier, as climate change poses a huge threat to the industry.

Until now, the impact of climate change has had a positive effect on Spanish grapes. But the continuing trend has begun to pose a challenge for winemakers worldwide. Cutting harmful emissions has become a priority. As vineyard owners experiment with more temperature resistant grape varieties, they're also considering completely relocating.
Life inside the corridors of the EU

What really goes on inside the European Union bureaucracy? Dutch Journalist and author Derk Jan Eppink has just brought out his "Life of a European Mandarin".

Eppink recalls his experience of working for a senior European Commissioner and the day to day life of bureaucrats in Brussels. He explains how the European Union works in a very different way to other parliamentary or government organisations. Our reporter, Guy Degen, also got an insight into Eppink's suggestions on how the EU could best use it's resources. In "Life of a European Mandarin", Eppink writes that the EU should focus on more specific issues.
The trials and tribulations of a check-out girl

Supermarket cashier, Anna Sam's new book "The Trials and Tribulations of a Check-Out Girl" is tipped to be a bestseller.

Anna Sam recounts the exchanges between cashier and customers. As a spokeswoman for downtrodden supermarket cashiers everywhere, she explains how it is on the other side of the till.

All this comes after the success of her blog, which has received over 600, 000 visits to date.
Moscow's underground art scene

As the Russian oligarchs turn to contemporary art, the artists fear over-commercialistation.

Apt-Art is back. The trend of Russian artists exhibiting their work in their own living rooms, common in the Soviet era, has returned to 21st century Moscow. This time round they're struggling against capitalism, not communism.
European Juggling Convention

Everything from three-legged races and unicycle hockey to foot-juggling is taking place at this week's European Juggling Convention in the German city of Karlsruhe.

This year the convention has attracted thousands of professional and amateur jugglers from all over the continent. The convention started in 1979, when it consisted of only 11 artists. Kate Hairsine dusted off her juggling clubs to join the participants.
Dutch folk band revive Pagan music in Europe

The Dutch band, Omnia, are bringing Pagan music to European stages. Under the motto, "Black is the new Green", they've attracted many fans with their blend of Celtic folk tunes and a back-to-nature philosophy.

Alex Bakst went along to the medieval festival Castlefest in the Netherlands to meet the band. The all-European group, Omnia, has become a flag-bearer for a unique form of Paganism. Neo-Celtic Pagans trace the roots of their movement back to the hippies of the 1960s. Omnia have rediscovered ancient instruments, such as the harp and the hurdy-gurdy. They are currently on tour in Germany, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
Iranian rappers find creative freedom in Germany

Rap group Tapesh 2012 has been banned from singing in Iran but they refuse to be silenced. They simply relocated to Bochum in western Germany.

Tapesh 2012 are really taking off. Their mixture of rap, reggae and traditional Persian sounds has found fans in Europe. But they really want to tour their home country, Iran.

Omid Pur-Yusofi, the band's founder, fled Iran at the age of 14 and has lived in Germany for 22 years now. He wants to be able to perform in Tehran in 2012. Their provocative political lyrics have earned their new song "Ma Mard Nistim" over 100, 000 views on YouTube in only 4 weeks.

Late notice (and bonus file)

Sorry folks. I know that EP is getting to the point where it's usually late these days, but today it's going to be a bit later than usual. There are a few good reasons for it — some related to the content itself, and some related to things going on with me — but it would be inappropriate for me to go into all of it right this moment. We're not skipping a week, and I'm fairly certain EP170 will be posted by noon today.

In the meantime, by way of apology and spurred by some demand for it in the forums, here's a minor bonus for those interested: the raw, mostly unedited recording session from Dr. Bowie's and my reading of “How I Mounted Goldie, Saved My Partner Lori, and Sniffed Out the People's Justice” last week. If you enjoy knowing how the sausage gets made, this particular file is a slightly more entertaining example than most. This isn't going into the feed, because it isn't really an Escape Pod episode; you'll have to either listen in the browser, or right-click on it and download it yourself if you want to hear it.

Maurice Franklin - The Space Elevator

Maurice Franklin, a Microsoft software engineer who is passionate about the space elevator, recently organized and hosted a conference on that topic at Microsoft's Redmond conference center. On this edition of Interviews with Innovators, Franklin discusses the reasons to build a space elevator, and describes how the concept, first proposed by Arthur C. Clarke, is evolving toward a practical implementation.

10 Mispronunciations That Make You Sound Stupid

Written by Toni Bowers

Right or wrong, people often judge you by the way you pronounce things. Say a word incorrectly and POW — they’ve pegged you as a provincial, poorly educated moron. Toni Bowers offers a list of commonly mangled words so you can double-check your own pronunciation.

Previously, TechRepublic ran an article about 10 grammar mistakes that make you look stupid. The examples cited involved the misuse of words in written and verbal communications. I’d like to go a step farther here and talk about words that may be used correctly but are pronounced wrong. They also may be much more flagrant examples of stupidity.

A caveat: My ear may be abnormally sensitive to mispronunciations since in college I developed an unnatural affinity for linguistics (can you say “Get a life?”). However, people often make snap decisions about character and intelligence based on their language biases, so it’s something you should be aware of. Here are some of my pet peeves, which you may or may not ever use in your life.

Note: This article originally appeared in our Career Management blog.

#1: Realtor

Many people — I’ve even heard it from people on national TV — pronounce this word REAL-uh-ter. Is this a case of wide-spread dyslexia, transposing the a and the l? It’s REAL-tor. That’s it. You’d think only two syllables would be easier to pronounce, but apparently not.

#2: Nuclear

Do you know how tough it is to be an advocate for the correct pronunciation of this word (NU-clee-er) when the president of the United States pronounces it NU-cu-lar? I don’t buy that it’s a regional thing. Ya’ll is a regional thing; nu-cu-lar is not.

#3: Jewelry

It’s not JOO-la-ree, it’s JOOL-ree. Again with the making things harder by turning a word into three syllables. What’s with that?

#4: Supposedly/supposably

The latter is a nonexistent word.

#5: Supposed to/suppose to

I think this one is more a matter of a lazy tongue than of ignorance. It takes an extra beat in there to emphasize the d at the end, but it’s worth it. And never omit the d if you’re using the term in a written communication or people will think you were raised in a hollowed-out tree trunk somewhere.

#6: Used to/use to

Same as above.

#7: Anyway/anyways

There’s no s at the end. I swear. Look it up.

#8: February/Febuary

As much as it galls me, there is an r between the b and the u. When you pronounce the word correctly it should sound like you’re trying to talk with a mouthful of marbles — FEB broo ary.

#9: Recur/reoccur

Though the latter is tempting, it’s not a word. And again, why add another syllable if you don’t need it?

#10: Mischievous/mischievious

I know, I know, it sounds so Basil Rathbone to say MIS cha vous, but that’s the right way. Mis CHEE vee us is more commonly used, but it’s wrong.

And last but not least, my personal all-time pet peeve — the word often. It should be pronounced OFF un, not OFF tun. The t is silent.

Living Planet: Environment Matters Around the Globe

Red List Update: Half of World’s Primates Could Disappear Soon -- Traditional Healers Help Protect Forests in Africa -- German Initiative Turns Church Towers into Homes for Falcons -- The Other Olympics: World Records in the Animal World -- these stories and more in this edition of Living Planet

Tune in via the live-stream or subscribe to Living Planet as a podcast. Send your comments and questions to features@dw-world.de.
Red List Update: Half the World's Primates Could Disappear Soon

Close to half of the world’s primates are in danger of becoming extinct. That’s according to the latest update of the Red List of Endangered Species published by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature or IUCN this week.

It was the first comprehensive review in five years of the world’s 634 kinds of primates. In Asia, more than 70 percent of primates are classified on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered -- meaning they could disappear forever in the near future.

Living Planet speaks to Jean-Christophe Vié, the Deputy Head of the IUCN Species Programme, about the main threats.

Interview: Irene Quaile

Traditional Healers Help Protect Forests in Africa

Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. With over 90% of the population living on subsistence agriculture, natural resources are coming under increasing pressure.

The situation is particularly bad in the over-crowded foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes – which is home not only to the famous mountain gorillas but an estimated 800 people per square kilometre.

People illegally enter the park in search of meat, building materials and firewood – often damaging the forest as they go. But a study has shown that traditional healers, who also collect from the forest, are actually helping to preserve it by cultivating medicinal gardens.

Report: Anna Lacey

German Initiative Turns Church Towers into Homes for Falcons

Habitat loss meant fewer breeding grounds for barn owls and kestrels in Germany. "Habitat church tower" is an initiative that helps the animals nest high up in church steeples.

Germany is not home to great apes of any kind, but more and more of OUR endemic species are also coming under threat. Germany has some 50,000 European kestrels – often known as the "elegant bird of prey". But this species’ future was in jeopardy. The same goes for Barn Owls. Both were unable to breed successfully, because they were being shut out from their own nests.

Two thirds of mating kestrel pairs in Germany choose to nest in church steeples – but that’s no easy task, as churches across the country have been closing off the entry points in their steeples, to keep out unwanted guests: pigeons. Then the environmental conservation organisation, NABU, decided to join forces with Churches across Germany to rectify the situation.

Report: Catherine Graue

The Other Olympics – World Records in the Animal World

Faster, higher, deeper -- the Olympics are starting on August 8th. But if animals were allowed to some of the competitions, there would hardly be any medals left for human athletes.

Did you know that falcons can fly at a speed of up to 400 kilometres? That’s been measured in the United States. Now, with the Olympics starting this week in Beijing, China, the news will be all about speed, weight, and height records once again.

We take this as an opportunity to bring you a medal count with a difference. Living Planet looks into what global conservation group WWF calls the Animal Olympics.

Report: Nina Haase

Late Night Live - 2008-08-07

Uighur´s: a threat to the games ?
Before the public relations diasters of Beijing´s smoggy skies - and the free-Tibet protests that marred the torch relay, the biggest fear the Chinese Communist Party had was that the Beijing Olympics would be a magnet for terrorists.

And, earlier this week it seemed those fears may have been well founded, as 16 police officers were killed in an attack in the remote Western province of Xinjiang.

The Chinese government says a group called the East Turkestan Islamic Movement were responsible for the attacks.

It is drawn attention to China´s ongoing repression of the Muslim Uighur who live in Xinjiang

Youth crime in South Africa
South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world and half of the offenders incarcerated are aged between 12 and 25. Once they finish their prison sentences as many as 80% offend again in the first six months. This is a conversation with the founder of one not-for-profit South African organisation that has had great success in reducing that recidivism rate, as well as keeping young offenders out of the prison system in the first instance.

Book Show 2008-08-07

Fay Weldon: Edinburgh International Book Festival (repeat)
Since Fay Weldon's Down Among the Women, written in the 1970s, she has written about subjects from cloning to cuckolding. In The Spa Decameron, ten women meet at a spa over Christmas and New Year and indulge in ten days of pampering and talking together. It's, in a sense, again 'down among the women', but this time the women are high achievers -- mortgage brokers, judges, and even journalists.

Late Night Live - 2008-08-06

Eddin Khoo
Southeast Asia correspondent Eddin Khoo talks about the latest border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand near the Preah Vihear Temple, which has recently been named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. He also updates the situation with former Opposition Leader, Anwar Ibrahim, who will be charged in court tomorrow over sodomy accusations. And the recent Cambodian elections.

Fiji: dealing with a 'coup culture'
A former senior Fijian public servant talks about an entrenched 'coup culture' in Fiji, where more than half the population was born since the first 1987 coup and has grown up with an acceptance of coup politics - a lack of respect for the rule of law and democratic principles, and an acceptance of violence as the best way to resolve conflict. Emele Duituturaga argues that women have a critical role to play in changing the 'coup culture'.

Centenary of the Model T
A conversation about the remarkable effect Ford's Model T had on American and Australian society at the beginning of the 20th century, as it kicked off an urban car culture. And the lessons of the Model T are still applicable in the current global automotive market with China and India ripe for a reliable, low cost, low fuel, contemporary car.

Book Show 2008-08-06

Alex Miller's Landscape of Farewell (repeat)
Alex Miller first won the Miles Franklin Award in 1993 with his book The Ancestor Game and then again in 2003 with Journey To The Stone Country. His novel Landscape of Farewell is a profound and moving story about the land, the past, exile and acceptance. It builds on the subject matter of Journey To The Stone Country.

Inside the PR industry with Bob Burton (repeat)
Moving from fiction where, for the most part, you know you're not dealing with fact, to the world of 'spin', where it can be very hard to know who is telling the whole truth about anything. There's fake TV news, carefully crafted media messages, and more and more stuff on the world wide web where you wouldn't know who's saying what. Canberra journalist Bob Burton has written Inside Spin: The Dark Underbelly of the PR Industry.

Late Night Live - 2008-08-05

Bruce Shapiro
Bruce discusses the HIV/AIDS in the USA. In one of the most devastating scientific papers in years, the Centers for Disease Control reported this week that AIDS has been underreported in the US by 40 percent, which means as many as 15,000 cases a year.

And, the death of Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

Northern Ireland: A Model for Peace?
The peace process in Northern Ireland has been held up as a model for ending conflict around the world - from the Middle East, to Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and East Timor.

But what exactly constitutes the Northern Irish 'model', and how exportable is it?

A Farewell to Alms: Gregory Clark
Economist Gregory Clark argues that the reason for the West's historical prosperity lie not in it's institutions or ideology, but in a Darwinian process of natural selection.

It is a controversial thesis that has profound implications for the ways in which we give aid and assistance to underdeveloped nations - and how we deal with economic inequality in our own.

You might have read Michael Chabon's book The Yiddish Policemen's Union. It's a hard boiled detective story in the style of Raymond Chandler set in an alternative world -- what if Israel did not exist and instead millions of European Jewish refugees took shelter in Alaska? It became a New York Times bestseller and the National Book Critics Circle in America named it number three in their five top fiction books of 2007.

Dale Dougherty - The Beauty of Print in a Digital Era

Dale Dougherty, General Manager of the Maker Media Division of O'Reilly Media tells why he looked past the web and chose a printed format as the most compelling one through which to communicate to tech-savvy builders. His ventures, Make and Craft magazines, then formed a springboard for blogs, the Make website, and annual Maker Faires. In this talk he "sings the praises of print", reminding us not to make the mistake of focusing on the new while ignoring old technology, which often gives us a far more compelling and immediate experience.

Late Night Live - 2008-08-04

Canberra Babylon
This week, Christian Kerr discusses missed opportunities for the Liberal party. For Brendan Nelson, any chance to score points against the Government end up in speculation over his leadership qualities, and no wonder, with voices within the Liberal camp calling for Peter Costello to contest the position. Will he finally rise to the challenge?

Andrew Murray
The former Democrats senator talks about the dynamic of the new Senate and the challenges facing the two independents; and he discusses his ongoing advocacy for a national reparations scheme for children who were abused in institutional care.

A Cultural History of the Chinese Cultural Revolution
For the first time a study of the cultural history of the Cultural Revolution has been published. In his book, Paul Clark argues that we shouldn´t characterise the years of the revolution, from 1966 to 1976, as simply destructive and chaotic. He´s found that innovation and creativity as well as the cultivation in the participation of cultural production, and the promotion of the modern were typical of the Cultural Revolution.

Book Show 2008-08-04

Nicholas Shakespeare's Secrets of the Sea (repeat)
Secrets of the Sea is set in a fictional, decaying seaside town in south east Tasmania called Wellington Point. It's where Alex Dove returns from England after his parents die in a car accident. He returns to a large, unprofitable farm and a dusty collection of ships in bottles. There, he meets Merridy, who has her own experience of tragedy -- her brother disappeared as a child. The two marry, they work the land, and Merridy establishes an oyster hatchery, but they are unable to have a child. They drift a little until a storm at sea causes them to give shelter to a strange young man called Kish.

2008-08-02 Is being gay in your biology?

What makes someone gay? The quest for the biological roots of sexual orientation remains rife with controversy. Is it in your genes, handedness, or the hormonal soup of the early foetus? Or, is the answer hidden deep inside the brain? Homo or hetero - the science of sexual attraction captures everyone´s attention.

Movement of biological hotpots
Biological hotspots are areas of high biodiversity. There are more species than in surrounding areas. For coral reefs, Indonesia is a hotspot. The region extends to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. Over time hotspots move. It´s thought hotspots develop where tectonic plates collide, slamming into each other. They produce island arcs, volcanism and new habitats. Today, coral reef hotspots are being denuded by human activity.

WA biological hotspot reveals new species
Over 1,500 flowering plants in Western Australia are undescribed, with 870 of these occurring in the south-western Australian biodiversity hotspot. State-wide, 298 new plants were named in 2007, making it the second most productive year in Western Australian taxonomic history. Of these, at least 130 are from the south-western Australian biodiversity hotspot. Ninety-five new botanical names were published in a special edition of the Western Australian Herbarium´s journal Nuytsia, which provides descriptions and names to species vulnerable to mining or of conservation concern.

Iconic banksia rescued
Researchers in Western Australia have increased the genetic diversity of a critically endangered banksia. Using material from extinct populations in research in Britain, scientists have brought back seedlings for planting in WA thereby increasing the genetic diversity of plants in the wild.

Mobility for disabled people
Darren Lomman has developed apparatus which allows disabled people to ride motorbikes, motor cycles and drive power boats.

The heart hormone angiotensin
The hormone angiotensin allows the heart to grow normally. Cells of the heart become bigger. The hormone also controls blood pressure. But in the disease state, it causes growth which may lead to heart failure. Work is being done to develop drugs which let angiotensin to its good work, but blocking the bad.

Volunteers describe galaxies at Galaxy Zoo
Volunteers have been called upon to help categorise images of a million galaxies using their home computers. The work is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Over 140,000 people are working on the project, named Galaxy Zoo. Some amazing objects in space are being discovered and the results have lead astronomers to describe a whole new category of galaxies. Naomi Fowler reports.

Saturn´s moon Titan
Saturn has over 60 moons. One stands out and that´s Titan. But it came from somewhere else and is unrelated to other satellites around the planet. Titan is much bigger than the other moons of Saturn and could even be considered a planet. It is even bigger than the planet Mercury! Andrew Prentice discusses Titan´s history and how it affects other satellites around Saturn.

2008-08-02 Blogs, bribes, booms and post punk Beijing (with distant peasant protests and executions). Reading the News from China

Once closed to the world, China is now in the middle of a media feeding frenzy. From state controlled radio and TV to the western media and Youtube, not forgetting 16 million bloggers (and rising), there´s an unprecedented flow of stories pumped out daily. But sometimes it seems that the more we´re told, the less we know.

As the world braces itself for the Beijing Games, Radio Eye has assembled its own Olympic team for this week´s feature, Reading The News From China. James West is a journalist with Triple J´s Hack program. His book Beijing Blur (Penguin Australia) is based on his experiences working for China´s state run radio; Stephanie Hemelryk Donald is professor of Chinese media studies at Sydney University and Nicholas Jose is the author of Avenue of Eternal Peace (Wakefield Press with a new Postscript Beijing 2008).

Punctuated with the sounds of China online and the music of punk and post-punk Beijing, Reading the News from China was produced by Steven Tilley and Nick Franklin.

2008-08-02 - Stoics at war

Recent philosophical debate on war has focused on the idea that you don´t just have to fight by the rules; you also have to be fighting in a just cause. But does this ignore much of the moral context of a soldier´s life. What binds comrades in arms together? What about stress and what about grief, and what does the ancient Roman philosophy of Stoicism have to tell us about it?

By Jonathon Sullivan.
Read by Stephen Eley and Jennifer Bowie (of Screen Space).

Q: What happened when you arrived at the address in question?

A: My Partner Lori opened my door and I jumped out. I arrested a suspect!

Q: Yes, Officer Bull. But I would like you to tell me exactly what happened, in detail, from the time you got out of the car.

A: Okay. My skulltop showed me which house, and I ran toward it. A man and three dogs ran out the door. One of them was a bitch with pretty haunches. She was in heat, and I really really really liked the way she smelled. I wanted to run after her, but I knew I should go after the man. So I did. Even though I liked the way she smelled!
